Habits can be bad things. You might have some bad habits that you are trying to shake. I feel for you because I know that can be hard. Don't stop trying, though. We CAN break them. However, some habits are good. Some habits are life-changing. There are little habits like opening the doors for women. I hope we never lose that one (even if you have been married for fifty years!). How about standing until the woman at the table is seated? Those are just little. The bigger ones are those that Jesus talks about. He talks about habits that can change our lives.
"'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' Matthew 22:37
Or how about…
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35By this, all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." John 13:34
This one is beautiful too…
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33
I know habits are hard to break, but they also seem hard to start. Think about working out. How hard is it to start? For me, it seems impossible. I get all fired up and get there – I see Miss Mae – get going for the first couple of days, but then something comes up, and it gets pushed back. Then, before I know it, I am out of the habit before I even start. Ugh!
I know habits can be hard to break and hard to start. Over the next thirty days, we will look at how to develop ways to make habits stick. They are tested, tried, and true, and if you join me on this walk together, I know we will come out on the other side enjoying life like never before.
So, think about the habits you want to start. Let's commit to our living God, who loves us, dies for us, and redeems us.
Let's break out together!
Love you all,
Rev. Jim
